Program teaches children living with cancer to express creativity through photography
Los Angeles, CA (September 14, 2010) – Today marks The Pablove Foundation’s launch of Pablove Shutterbugs, an opportunity to give children living with cancer the chance to express and develop their creative voices through photography. A pilot program will begin in January at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, with expansions at pediatric care facilities nationwide to follow.
During the three-month program each child receives hands-on experience through one-on-one weekly instruction and group classes taught by special guests. The students will also receive their own camera equipment, which will be theirs to keep upon completion of the program. At the end of each course there is a Pablove Shutterbugs group show at an art gallery displaying students’ artistic vision while raising awareness of childhood cancer.
A Pablove Shutterbugs Giving Tree has been established to grant the gift of photography to children living with cancer. Gifts on the giving tree range from purchasing a memory card for $10 to sponsoring a student for $1000. All donations are tax-deductible and dedicated solely to support the mission of the Pablove Shutterbugs program.
The program was born over breakfast between Pablove Foundation Executive Director Jo Ann Thrailkill and Shutterbugs program chair Cath Berclaz. A published photographer and video producer, Berclaz is basing the curriculum on her experience teaching photography with the Children’s Hope Foundation and New York Cares. Instructors will be selected from the professional photography world as well as educational institutions such as LA-Art Center, Cal Arts, USC, UCLA, and NYU.
