Nielsen SoundScan, the entertainment industry’s data information system that tracks unit point-of-purchase sales of recorded music product – which power many of the Billboard charts – have announced the 2011 mid-year sales data for the period January 3, 2011 through July 3, 2011.

2011 Mid-Year Factoids

Album sales are up for the first time since 2004.

Overall Albums (including Albums and Track Equivalent Album sales) are up 3.6% over the same time period last year; Total album sales are up 1% over the same time period in 2010.

There have been 103 million CD album sales through the first six months of the year.

CD album sales through the first six months account for 66% of all album sales compared to 71% in 2010.

Rock, Rap, Classical, Electronic and New Age genres have all experienced positive sales gains through the first six months of the year.

Catalog album sales are up 7% through the first six months over 2010 and Deep Catalog album sales (which are a sub set of Catalog) are up 13% over YTD 2010.

Vinyl album sales continue to see significant growth with sales up 41% for the first six months compared to 2010.

Adele has the biggest-selling album, digital album, and digital track of the year; Sony Music, Adeles label, has the biggest total album market share and Universal Music has the biggest digital track market share.

Digital Factoids:

Digital album sales are up 19% through the first six months over 2010 and are on pace to set a new sales record at the end of the year.

Digital album sales account for 1 out of every 3 album purchases (33%) through the first half of the year.

Digital track sales are up 11% over 2010 through the first six months and are on pace to set a new sales record at the end of the year.

E.T. by Katy Perry tops the chart for best selling digital song for the first six months of 2011 with 4.1 million downloads

Best Seller Album Factoids:

July 3, 2011 Eminems Recovery becomes the first digital album to sell more than one million units; Adeles 21 is on track to surpass a million units next week.

March 20, 2011 Black Eyed Peas I Gotta Feeling becomes the first digital song to sell more than 7 million tracks.

Through the first six months of the year, Adele has the biggest selling; album of the year, digital album of the year, physical album of the year and digital track of the year.

o 21 by Adele, has sold 2.5 million album sales, 1.5 million physical albums and 992,000 digital album sales while Rolling into the Deep has been downloaded more than four million times.

o Note that Adeles 19 is the biggest selling catalog album of the year through the first six months of 2011.

Lady Gagas Born This Way experienced the biggest 1st week album sales of 2011 with 1,108,000 units the biggest 1st week album sales since 50 Cents Massacre in 2005.

o The album sold a record 662,000 digital albums in the first week of release.
