In another vivid indication that Fort Lauderdale isn’t what you think it is, tickets go on sale Monday morning for Lauderdale Live, a two-night downtown concert series in December that includes Texas troubadour Lyle Lovett, the smart harmonies of the Indigo Girls and critically lauded up-and-comers such as the folk duo Shovels & Rope and former Drive-By Trucker Jason Isbell.

The concerts are scheduled for Dec. 7-8 at Huizenga Plaza on the New River. Other acts will include Huey Lewis & the News, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, the Wild Feathers, Holly Williams and more. An additional night of music on Dec. 6, called the “Yacht Discovery Experience,” will be held up river onboard three ships.

Lauderdale Live would be the second major music festival to debut in the city in 2013. In April the Tortuga Music Festival drew tens of thousands of residents and tourists to Fort Lauderdale beach for a two-day sea-turtle fundraiser that included country star Kenny Chesney, Americana darlings the Avett Brothers, blues-rock siren Grace Potter and bluesman Ben Harper.

When the Tortuga Music Festival was announced, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler acknowledged that live music was a tool that the city would be using to diversify its reputation as playground for the posh set.    

“Live music enriches a community, makes it more entertaining, more lively, more interesting,” Seiler said.

General-admission Lauderdale Live weekend passes are $79 (plus fees), about half the price of a Tortuga Music Festival pass, and include access to a variety of dining options from local food trucks, restaurants and vendors; a craft beer garden; and unlimited re-entry.  VIP passes ($199) include exclusive viewing areas, a private bar and a shaded, seated chill-out area.

For $379, a Captain’s Pass gets you all of the above, as well as access to a yacht docked just off the festival grounds, featuring a private bar, restrooms and an upscale hang-out area. Also included is access to a premium seating area in the park, private restrooms by the main stage and free  festival swag.  

The Captain’s Pass also gets you entry to the Dec. 6  “Yacht Discovery Experience” and Saturday’s official after-party. The former takes place on  three luxury yachts just up the New River at Esplanade Park, with food, drinks and live music (Jillette Johnson, Jackopierce and more to be named). The after-party is at Revolution Live, and includes drink specials, DJs and surprise appearances.
